Present status, development trends and implementation conditions of a shared catalogueing project of technical libraries
Abstract
The shared catalogueing system of Hungarian technical libraries, under the acronym OSZKÁR is the first system of this kind in this country. Following its successful establishment and the implementation of its initial database, OSZKÁR has changed substantially, though the changes do not influence the advantages of shared cataloguing that are presented in details. The most important recent modifications include, in addition to the replacement of the first software, several new options of participation, and an extension of OSZKÁR s initial subject scope. Owing to these changes, several new libraries can join OSZKÁR, and the database available for users can be extended. Development trends and tasks include expanded participation possibilities, flexible adaption to scope changes, improvement of database access (e.g., the production of a CD-ROM version), retrospective search capabilities, and development towards networking. Conditions for development are also discussed, concerning hardware, software, interfaces, telecommunications, processing tools (among others standards, aids, indexing languages), retrospective conversion and servicing techniques. Shared catalogueing operation is foreseen to start in 1994.
