INFORMETRICS - an extension of the traditional bibliometric analyses
Abstract
The head of the Centre for Informetric Studies (CIS) presents its research activities and illustrates them by examples. The emerging field of informetrics is described in a historical perspective as a subfield of bibliometrics. This new approach is the combination of advanced information retrieval theories and methodologies for the scientrfic study of information flows. CIS aims to apply improved bibliometric methods, not only to scientometric studies and to research evaluation of science and technology, but also to the analysis of their mutual societal, industrial and other special relations. It is pointed out that library and information science professionals may raise the levél of their position in the information work hierarchies as well as the exploration of informetric methods to support „well informed" management decisions and policy making.
