Accessibility of the simplified user interface of the Hungarian Electronic Library

Abstract

The first version of the simplified user interface of the Hungarian Electronic Library (VMEK, http://vmek.oszk.hu/) – which is operating in the National Széchényi Library – was completed in 2004. The Hungarian Electronic Library Association won support for its updating in 2014. In August 2014, the author joined the project as a volunteer and took part in teamwork. Among other tasks, she published a call and invited people with disabilities to make comments and suggestions and test the home page.

She wishes is to draw web developers’ and content managers’ attention to some important principles, which substantially promote the accessibility of web pages. In this paper, she mentions the most important web developing recommendations that assist users in avoiding the biggest obstacles. The technical parts are followed by significant recommendations for content managers, which do not require any coding knowledge.
