Comparing e-learning standards: AICC, SCORM, xAPI, cmi5

Abstract

E-learning standards may cause problems even for experienced teachers, developers and designers. These issues can be overcome by well-chosen authoring software. The situation is nevertheless not at all simple. There are several e-learning standards which are supported by various platforms and learning management systems – all have their advantages and disadvantages. Before using them it is worth considering the objectives of teaching and learning at our institutions, the methods of learning and education, as well as learning activities. It is important to learn and understand the contents, aims and areas of use of e-learning standards. The article does not wish to present the relevant standards in detail. Instead, it provides a short summary of the advantages and disadvantages of best-known e-learning standards, as well as the differences between them.
