The Digital Hungarian Watermark Databank on the internet

Abstract

The article deals with the history and role of the Digital Hungarian Watermark Databank (DMVA), that is available for free in Hungarian on The Memory of Paper – Berstein portal. The author describes the circumstances and purpose of the creation of the first and second DMVA, and its simpler and faster search system, which is different from other motif-based watermark databanks, as well as the development plan of the third Hungarian digital watermark databank, the DVA. From the article, the reader can learn about the most important areas of watermark collection in Hungarian filigree, the determining role of age, place and originality of watermarks, as well as the group of successful users of DMVA.
