Abstract

József Karai was also among the composers who began their careers as students or followers of Kodály. However, the members of the "Thirty" group of composers were soon exposed to new compositional principles and techniques. Karai drew on the compositional solutions of the Polish school of composition to formulate his avant-garde, innovative choral works. Thus, aleatoria—the controlled, probable succession of specific musical elements—became the basis of his musical expression. Following the Kodály tradition and taking modern trends into account, he created a sovereign musical world with great precision. The article below is an excerpt from my DLA dissertation entitled Aleatoria and Expressivity: József Karai's Avant-Garde Choral Art; Modern Compositional Techniques in the Service of Musical Expression.
